Start Me Up: Yanks make grown men cry with relentless attack
Friday, August 21, 2009
Yankees 20 23 1
Red Sox 11 12 1
WP: Pettitte (10-6)
LP: Penny (7-8)
PLAYER OF THE GAME: The entire lineup produced but I think it's safe to say Hidke Matsui and his 7 RBI's get this award. He only had 2 hits, but they were both homers.
PLAY OF THE GAME: Yeah, this game featured 31 runs, 25 hits, 10 walks, and 4 home runs. This wasn't a game for the Web Gem archives.
TURNING POINT OF THE GAME: Jorge Posada's 2-run single in the first inning. It reminded the Red Sox who was in first place and how well the Yanks handled them last time.
GAME NOTES:
- Everyone in the lineup (excluding Johnny Damon, who is day-to-day after leaving the game in the first inning) had a hit, a run scored, and a run batted in.
- The Yanks are now 7.5 games ahead of the Red Sox in the division. I'll be greedy and ask the question everyone's asking: If the Yankees can sweep, with a 9.5 game lead, is this race over?
- If you're going to give up 11 runs in a game, it might as well be on a night where you score 20, but the Yankees are going to need better pitching to win (sweep?) this series.
- With CC and AJ going these next two games, you get the feeling like the Yankees are expected to sweep.
- Nick Swisher didn't hustle in the 9th inning of the game. I'm sure Girardi will address it, and I'm sure Swisher immediately knew he made a mistake, but it forced me to go with my back-up headline. I was planning on 21 Guns, but alas, I go for the Rolling Stones reference.
