Red Sox 7- Yankees 0
Tuesday, June 9, 2009
Yankees 0 2 1
Red Sox 7 9 0
WP: Beckett (7-2)
LP: Burnett (4-3)
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Josh Beckett. His six shutout innings were the reason the Red Sox won the game. He gave up only one hit and only came out because he was at 93 pitches through 6 innings.
PLAY OF THE GAME: David Ortiz's home run in the second inning. His 3rd home run of the season gave the Red Sox the lead they would not relinquish.
TURNING POINT OF THE GAME: Josh Beckett throwing the first pitch of the game. Once Beckett got going, he was unstoppable. The one hit gave up was an infield hit to Cano. He set the tone for a Red Sox win while A.J. Burnett set the tone for a Yankees loss.
MICHAEL KAY QUOTE OF THE NIGHT:
John Flaherty: "Is Sunday's game a night game?"
Kay: "Is it? I have a wedding on Saturday, and if it is a night game this changes my whole plan for Saturday night."
(upon revelation that the game is at 1:05 p.m.)
Kay: "John, you had me all excited. I was here rearranging my plans in my head for Saturday only to find out I'm doing the game on Sunday."
NOTES:
- The Red Sox now lead the season series against the Yankees 6-0 this season.
- After tonight's game, the Yankees and Red Sox are now tied for first place in the AL East.
- This is the 7th straight game that the Yankees have made an error.
- Tonight was the first time this season that A.J. Burnett has failed to go at least 5 innings this season.
- Josh Beckett has now given up three unearned runs on 3 hits and four walks while striking out 17 batters.
- This is the first time the Yankees have been shutout this season. They were the last team in the Majors to have not been shutout.
- The Yankees took Slade Heathcott, an outfielder from a high school in Texas. The Yankees need to sign him because they will not get compensation for not signing him, as he is compensation for not signing their pick last year. Heathcott is 18 years old (only a month older than me actually, which is extremely weird to me).
- This isn't a note, more of an observation. People will panic about tonight's game, that's what they do. But Beckett was on top of his game tonight, that is what a team's top starter is supposed to do. There was no way the Yankees were touching Beckett tonight.
TOMORROW:
Yankees at Red Sox, 7:05 p.m. at Fenway Park
Chien-Mien Wang vs Tim Wakefield
SEE YA!
