Rays 9 9 4
Yankees 7 7 2
WP: JP Howell (1-2)
LP: Mariano Rivera (0-2)
S: Choate (3)
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Ben Zobrist. Zobrist went 2-3 with a solo HR, BB, 2 runs scored, and led off a 9th inning 4-run rally off Mariano Rivera with a triple.
PLAY OF THE GAME: B.J. Upton's lunging catch in the bottom of the 9th to end the game. Robinson Cano represented the tying run, and he hit a line drive to deep center field. Upton, who was playing deep, made a lunging catch on the warning track to seal the victory for the Rays.
TURNING POINT OF THE GAME: J.P. Howell striking out Hideki Matsui to end the bottom of the eight. Matsui was pinch hitting from Francisco Cervelli with runners on first and third and two outs. Matsui tried to check his swing on a 2-2 pitch from Howell, but 3B umpire Tim McClellan said he went around. The strikeout kept the game tied at 5, and then the Rays went out and scored 4 runs off Rivera the next inning.
NOTES:
Today marked only the second time this season Rivera was taken out in the middle of an inning. He gave up 4 R, 3 earned.
The Rays are 3-0 at Yankee Stadium this season and have won four straight against the Bronx Bombers.
Mark Teixeira's home-run in the 8th inning was his 17th of the season. He leads all Yankees in HRs.
