Yankees Acquire Hairston Jr. at Deadline

Friday, July 31, 2009

The Yankees acquiered utility man Jerry Hairston Jr. from the Cincinatti Reds for a minor league (A) catcher. This is the only reported move the Yankees have made. Hairston likely replaces Cody Ransom on the roster and become the 3B on A-Rod's off day. He also plays every outfield position and can provide some much needed defensive upgrades late in games. Hairston Jr. is hitting .254 with 8 HR, 27 RBI, 47 runs, and 7 stolen bases.

Other notable trades:

The Detroit Tigers acquired LHP Jarrod Washburn from the Seattle Mariners for pitching prospects Luke French and Mauricio Robles.

The Red Sox traded Justin Mastersone, Nick Hagadone, and Bryan Price for 1B/C Victor Martinez. They also traded 1B Adam LaRoche for 1B Casey Kotchman.

The Blue Jays traded Scott Rolen to the Reds for Edwin Encarnacion.

The Marlins acquired 1B Nick Johnson from the Nationals for AA Aaron Thompson.

The Twins acquired SS Orlando Cabrera from the A's.

Rumor is Halladay could possibly be headed to the Angels we will update if any other trades or news breaks out.

UPDATE 4:30: Joel Sherman of the NY Post and Jon Heyman on MLB Network are saying that no deal for Roy Halladay was done. Joel Sherman is also reporting that Jake Peavy has been traded to the White Sox...again! Didn't he veto that trade about 2 months ago, plus he's on the DL. But MLB Network just confirmed that this deal has been agreed to. Peavy may not even be back this year. I don't even know what to think of this trade.
