Yankees 6 A's 3
Friday, July 24, 2009
Athletics 3 9 0
Yankees 6 10 0
WP: Sabathia (10-6)
LP: Mazzaro (2-7)
S: Hughes (1)
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Mark Teixeira. Tex went 2-4 with 3 RBI and a run. He hit a 2-run HR and as always, provided an excellent game defensively.
PLAY OF THE GAME: Robinson Cano's backhanded play and throw to first and Teixeira's scoop on the other end. The ball looked to be a single but instead got Hughes out of the eighth inning at only 9 pitches. Bringing him out for the 9th for his first career save.
TURNING POINT OF THE GAME: Mark Teixeir'as 2-run HR in the fourth inning. At this point, Vinny from Jersey was cruising through the Yankees lineup, but Tex reminded him this was the big stage, and hit a bomb that woke up the Yankees offense.
GAME NOTES:
- After a 2 hour and 43 minute rain delay, they were able to get the game in and had it start at 9:40. I contemplated going to bed around the eighth, but I am just too dedicated to the blog to let that happen.
- Once again, Sabathia struggled early but settled later on. He has a team-leading 10 wins on the season.
- Hughes pitches two more scoreless innings and picked up his first career save. I know I shouldn't be, but in the back of my mind I am going, "He's going to have a bad outing sooner or later, please do not let it happen when we play the Red Sox in two weeks." Or maybe he's the next Mo, and will rarely have bad outings. Uh-oh, I think I'm starting a keep Hughes in the pen debate for next year. I'll stop while I'm ahead.
Tommorow:
Yankees vs A's 7:05 ET (unless there's another rain delay)
Brett Anderson vs Joba Chamberlain
See Ya!
