DET 5
NYY 9

WP Moseley (3-2)
LP Bonderman (6-9)

Players of the Game: Curtis Granderson and Mark Teixeira. Granderson's new and improved swing has been productive so far and he's really been playing good defense. Another diving catch and another home run tonight for the Grandy Man. Teixeira was the only Yankee with a multi-hit game tonight going 3-for-4 with a home run, double, and two RBI.

Play of the Game: Granderson's diving catch in the fourth. He was frozen for a second then had to come in on the ball and made a nice diving catch.

Turning Point of the Game: I'd say Granderson's home run. It broke the game open and it was key because the Yankees bullpen had to work out of a lot of threats in the late innings.

Notes:

  • David Robertson and Mariano Rivera both pitched on back-to-back days in non-save situations. This might affect the way the bullpen is used tomorrow.
  • The Yankees remain tied in first with the Tampa Bay Rays with tonight's win.
  • Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira went back-to-back in the first inning to give the Yankees a quick 3-0 lead.
  • The Yankees bullpen once again did a great job. Joba, Kerry Wood, Chad Gaudin (who actually wasn't effective, David Robertson, and Mariano Rivera). Robertson got out of a bases loaded jam that Gaudin got into by only allowing one run.
  • I fell asleep at the beginning and wasn't really watching late so I don't fully understan what was going on with the home plate umpire and hit batsmen tonight. Apparently the benches were warned in the first and I believe it was the eighth when Miguel Cabrera was hit in the back after he hit two home runs already. Jim Leyland thought Chad Gaudin should be ejected but he wasn't. Leyland argued and was thrown out. The following inning the Tigers pitcher threw behind Jeter and was also not thrown out. And Girardi was irritated by this because it was blatantly with intent. So very confusing night for the umpire behind the plate.

Game 5 A.J. Showed Up

Wednesday, June 16, 2010

I wasn't closely following this game so I'll just go over a few things on my mind.

  • In a World Series rematch, the Yankees were hoping for Game 2 A.J. to show up and shutdown the Phillies. Instead he woke up a slumping offense by pitching more like the A.J. Burnett that got lit up in Game 5. I don't remember the last time Burnett had a solid start. April maybe?
  • The good news is the bullpen did a fine job today. Boone Logan and Chad Gaudin were able to shut the Phillies down and keep the Yankees in the game. The Yankees ninth inning rally fell just short as Lidge struck out Posada who represented the tying run.
  • What can I say about Robinson Cano? Did you see the home run he hit? It hasn't landed yet. The guy is on fire and it's safe to say he is the best second baseman in the league right now. Maybe even best hitter? Definitely in the discussion.

Post-Game/Pre-Game

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

An unusual day today in Yankeeland. Last night's game was suspended due to rain after five innings and was continued earlier today before this evenings game. In the suspended game, Derek Jeter hit a solo home run to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. That's the only run scored all game and secured the Yankees victory. Only other thing worth noting is that Mariano Rivera was wild today. I think I counted eight of his 14 pitches were balls. Not a very Mo-like ratio. Anyway here's the lineups for the evening game.

Yankees
Jeter SS
Swisher RF
Teixeira 1B
Rodriguez 3B
Cano 2B
Thames DH
Cervelli C
Russo LF
Gardner CF

LHP Andy Pettitte

Twins
Span CF
Hudson 2B
Mauer DH
Morneau 1B
Cuddyer RF
Young LF
Hardy SS
Harris 3B
Butera C

LHP Francisco Liriano

Lefites Dueling: Andy Pettitte and Francisco Liriano are both having solid seasons and the lefties squeare off against each other today. They faced each other the last time the two teams met and Pettitte won that battle.
Gardner Sliding: Joe Girardi inserted Nick Swisher in the two-hole and moved Gardner back down into the ninth spot. It seemed as if Gardner's production had declined since moving into the two-hole.
Roster Moves: The Yankee signed Chad Gaudin and added him to the 25-man roster. To accomodate this move Boone Logan was optioned to AAA Scranton and Shane Lindsey was DFA'd.

News and Notes

Monday, March 29, 2010

We are now days - not weeks - away from Opening Day and the excitement is building towards the season. Joe Girardi only has a few decisions to make regarding the bullpen and the bench, but the roster is almost finalized.

  • As John talked about earlier, Joba seems like he is going to be the headline for a little while, at least until the beat writers actually have games to write about. Over the weekend, Director of Professional Scouting Billy Eppler stirred the pot a little more saying that the Yankees were leaving Joba in the bullpen for good. Brian Cashman later said that wasn't an official team decision and just Eppler's opinion. Now Cashman may have used "opinion" instead of "Eppler's running his mouth without listening to the people in charge," but he is the Pro Scouting Director, so he's pretty high up there. Cashman's statements lead us to believe that Joba will be reevaluated as a starter at the end of the season. So two important Yankee officials talk about 2 of the 3 options I presented last week, but still leave out what I believe to be the best option.
  • According to our friend over at LeNYy's Yankees, the fans agree that Phil Hughes should be the fifth starter.
  • After being released by the Yankees last week, Chad Gaudin wasted no time in finding a new home with the Oakland A's.
  • President Barack Obama will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Nationals Park on Opening Day when the Phillies play in Washington. They should leave him out for the real first pitch too, since left-handed Commander-in-Chief (get the parallel?) will probably be better than anyone the Nationals can run out there.

The five battling for fifth

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

We are now less than two weeks away from the first pitch of the Major League Baseball season. 12 days to be exact. 12 more days until Derek Jeter walks to the plate taps the plate with his bat while he holds his arm held up to the umpire. 12 more days until we can just watch baseball everyday instead of the normal crap that is on TV.

Before we get to that point, however, the Yankees have some decisions to make. The most pressing issue, is the decision for the Yanks fifth starter. This despite the fact that the Yankees only need to use CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett, Javy Vazquez, and Andy Pettitte until April 24th because of the schedule.

But Joe Girardi will announce his decision Thursday about who will win the job, so I thought it would be a good idea to take a look at the competitors

Sergio Mitre- (14 IP, 3.21 ERA, 14 K)
Mitre has pitched very well this spring, as he now seems to be completely healed from Tommy John surgery. He is throwing harder and has better command. It will be interesting if the Yankees, as an organization, are willing to give Mitre the spot over two of their most higly-touted prospects in Hughes and Chamberlain.

Phil Hughes- (13 IP, 4.15 ERA, 10 K)
After being extremely effective out of the bullpen last year, Hughes is vying for a spot as a starter, which he has been throughout his entire career. He gave up 3 homeruns to the Phillies yesterday, but both Girardi and Hughes said that he was throwing his best stuff yesterday. He hasn't proven himself as a starter yet in the majors, but this may be his shot.

Joba Chamberlain
-(6.2 IP, 16.20 ERA, 5 K)
He hasn't had very good stats this spring, but spring training stats aren't worth the paper they're printed on. He pitched well as a starter last season, until the Yankees started limiting his innings, but there are no inning restrictions this year, so they may finally just hand him the ball and say "go get 'em."

Chad Gaudin- ( 9.1 IP, 8.68 ERA, 5K)
This name on the list has a little bit of an asterisk next to it, because, according to some reports, Gaudin was placed on waivers, but Chad Jennings reports he's still in camp and there's nothing official on the Yankees website, so I'll at least mention him. He pitched very well last season, but he is out of options and due almost $3 million this season.

Alfredo Aceves-(14.1 IP, 3.77 ERA, 7K)
Aceves was impressive out of the Yankees bullpen last year, winning 10 games as a reliever. I think it is unlikely that he gets the nod as a starter, but he is in the mix. he's had one of the best springs of any of the candidates, which I'm sure is making Girardi's decision much tougher.

We're all waiting to hear Giradi's decision, as well as waiting for the roster to be finalized as we move closer to the season, so make sure you stay tuned for all that news.

Chad Gaudin Placed On Waivers

So just a couple of days after I speculated Mitre being traded and the Yankees keeping Gaudin as their long man, Gaudin has been placed on waivers. Gaudin is out of options so once he clears the Yankees could send him to AAA and pay the rest of his salary or release him pay a fraction of it.

Gaudin has been the least effective fifth starting candidate in spring training so it doesn't come as much of a shock. I do think this increases the chances of Mitre being kept on the team for the start of the season.

Chad Jennings of the LoHud Blog has a nice article about Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain's battle for the fifth starting spot. He mentions how despite Hughes giving up a walk-off home run eysterday he and Girardi feel he threw his best. The article also discusses Chamberlain's progress this spring from some dismal performances early on.

Sergio Mitre: Possible Fifth Starter, or Trade Bait?

Sunday, March 21, 2010

While March Madness has taken over everyone's lives the past week, all is relatively quiet in the world of baseball. The Yankees made cuts today, sending Jesus Montero, Austin Romine, Colin Curtis and Reid Gorecki to the minor league complex. But the big question is, who will be the fifth starter?

Sergio Mitre has caught the attention of everyone, especially after his stellar performance against the Tampa Bay Rays, in which he allowed two hits and struck out seven in five innings. But there has been some rumblings that either Mitre or Chad Gaudin will be traded at the end of spring training. Now if you look at spring training stats, Mitre seems to be the better pick. But if you look at spring training stats, Jon Weber should be the next Babe Ruth.

In a case like this you need to look past the spring training stats. Gaudin may have an ERA around 8, but his track record is much better and he is more reliable than Mitre in the long-run. If you're looking at Mitre as the fifth starter, you have to compare him to Hughes. Hughes has been the face of the Yankees farm system the last few years, and he has been groomed to be the next starting pitcher.

I think, in the end, what will benefit the Yankees in the long run is that Gaudin stays and Mitre gets traded, while Hughes gets the fifth spot in the rotation.

Today's game was rained out, but they will have an intrasquad game tomorrow because they need several pitcher to throw.

Just saw this on espn.com: Joe Mauer of the Twins has agreed to an 8-year $184 million contract extension.

Fight for the Fifth Spot, Round 1

Saturday, March 6, 2010

I wanted to put this up yesterday after Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain pitched, but I didn't get around to it. The big question this spring training is who is the fifth starter for the Yankees? Hughes and Chamberlain are expected to be the front-runners, but after their performances yesterday, and the performances of some others this spring, it can easily be said that it is wide open. Now that the Yankees have played four spring training games, and each has gotten roughly 35 pitches in, let's breakdown how they have looked and the chances each have.

Chad Gaudin:
2 IP, 1 H, 1 K, 0 ER, 34 pitches, 23 strikes.

Sergio Mitre
2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 K

Alfredo Aceves
2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 K

Phil Hughes
2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 33 pitches, 18 strikes.

Joba Chamberlain
1.1 IP, 3 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 33 pitches, 14 strikes.

Kei Igawa (Yeah, I know. But Girardi has said not to rule him out)
1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 K

Analysis: Obviously it's still very early, but, there should be some cause for concern with Chamberlain and Hughes. All candidates had similar lines, with the exception of those two. My theory is that Hughes and Chamberlain could be putting a little more pressure on themselves whereas the others are pitching with no pressure at all. What really bothers me is Chamberlain's performance. Maybe it was because he was coming back from having the flu, but 14 strikes out of 33 pitches? Sounds like the exact same Joba from last year that we know.

On the other hand, the darkhorse of this group is Gaudin. He has the most experience out of anyone in this group, and pitched well for the Yankees at the end of last year. He went 2-0 with a 3.43 ERA in 11 games (6 starts). If Gaudin remains consistent and efficient for the rest of the spring, he has a legitimate chance of being the fifth starter. The the question becomes, do you put both Hughes and Chamberlain in the pen? Or one in the pen and the other to the minors to work as a starter?

There is still plenty of time left for decisions to be made, but this gives you a good idea of where the competition is at the first mile of a five mile race (yes I run cross-country I must make a running reference).

Other Yankees news:

  • The Yankees lost 9-1 to the Toronto Blue Jays today. A.J. Burnett pitched, working out of a first inning bases loaded jam, but couldn't get out of the second, giving up 2 doubles and a single, surrendering 2 runs on 5 hits . His main concern was developing a changeup since he is only a two-pitch pitcher. He said that it's "only going to help."
  • Francisco Cervelli was hit in the head today by a pitch and suffered a concussion. It was his second concussion in four months, so you know they will be careful with him. Girardi said that Mike Rivera is the third string catcher, not Jesus Montero, should Cervelli not be on the team come April.
  • Gaudin and Mitre will pitch tomorrow against the Twins in Fort Myers, Florida. Andy Pettitte will pitch a two-inning simulated game.
  • Mariano Rivera, Damaso Marte, and Chan Ho Park are the only pitchers who have not faced live hitting and will throw a batting practice session Monday.
That's it for today...See Ya!

Park to pitch at Stadium this year

Monday, February 22, 2010

The Yankees have signed 36-year old right-hander Chan Ho Park to a 1 year $1.2 million deal. Brian Cashman could not confirm the deal, as it had not been officially completed but Park held a press conference in Seoul, South Korea just after 1 AM Eastern time. Park will join the bullpen mix, instead of joining the competition for the fifth starter spot that is already pretty packed with Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes, Chad Gaudin, Sergio Mitre, and Alfredo Aceves.

LOS ANGELES - JUNE 27: Chan Ho Park #61 of th...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

With the NL Champion Philadelphia Phillies last year, Park went 3-3 with a 4.43 ERA. That ERA is bloated as he made 7 starts to the tune of a 7.29 ERA. But, after moving to the bullpen, Park recorded a 2.52 ERA and a WHIP of 1.18.

While being most widely known as the first South Korean Major League, Park made some headlines in December when it became public that he was suing his former Dodger battery mate Chad Kreuter for failing to pay off a loan. So, don't go asking for him to loan you any money, Jorge.

Good move by Cashman, bringing in another quality arm to help David Robertson, Damaso Marte, and the rest bridge the gap to Mariano in the 9th because, as Cashman himself states, "The more the merrier. You can never have enough."

The Yanks 40-man roster is currently full, so there will be a corresponding move to free a spot when Park's contract becomes official.

Yanks may use 3-man rotation for ALCS

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

As reported by Sam Borden from the LoHud Yankees Blog, Joe Girardi and the Yankees are "definitely considering" using only three starters for the ALCS against the Angles.

NEW YORK - JULY 19: Manager Joe Girardi #27 o...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

If they do, the rotation would set up like this:

Game 1 (Friday, Oct 16 in NY): Sabathia
Game 2 (Saturday, Oct 17 in NY): Burnett
Game 3 (Monday, Oct 19 in LA): Pettitte
Game 4 (Tuesday, Oct 20 in LA: Sabathia (on short rest)
Game 5*: (Thursday, Oct 22 in LA): Burnett
Game 6*: (Saturday, Oct 24 in NY): Pettitte
Game 7*: (Sunday, Oct 25 in NY): Sabathia
*If necessary

Sabathia would be able to pitch 3 times in the event of a seven-game series. This would allow the Yankees to keep Joba in the bullpen, and not have to use Chad Gaudin in a pressure-packed situation. Joba hasn't started since September 30 when he gave up 3 runs on 7 hits in 3.2 innings against the Royals. Gaudin hasn't pitched at all since October 3rd when he came in in relief against the Rays for 1.1 scoreless innings.

I think if you can get Sabathia three starts, and he feels comfortable with it, you have to do it. He hasn't had to go on short rest all season and he had a light workload in September, so he's well-rested.You already have Joba in bullpen mode, so leave him there, and they can fix all the problems with him in the off-season and Spring Training. I will put up with Joe Buck and Tim McCarver talking about him pitching on short rest a million times (assuming I haven't already muted the TV permanently by Game 4) to watch Sabathia get the ball again.

While helping the rotation, it also helps the bullpen. With Joba, Hughes, and Mo in the back end, and Coke (hopefully not Choke), Aceves, and Robertson in the middle innings, the bullpen will be solid.

While I don't know, because of superstition, if we will do a series preview, but we might do a scouting report-type post on the Angels. Either way, we will still provide news as it happens throughout the week.

Weather Update:

Empire State of Mind: That was the planned headline for the game when the Yankees clinched home-field advantage, but since it happened the same day they clinched, we went with Wake Me Up When September Ends.

Lineup Notes:Girardi is taking full advantage of having everything clinched by resting Jeter, A-Rod, Teixeira, Matsui, Swisher, and giving Posada a half-day off. Cano is obviously in there, because it must be written into his contract that he has to play every inning of every game as he rarely gets a day off and is almost never taken out when the game is out of hand.

We Now Turn to Chad Gaudin

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

I have to be in class in 10 minutes so I'll keep this short and sweet. The Yankees lost 5-2 to the Angels yesterday, in Anaheim, making them 0-4 their this season. They are 5-18 in the last five seasons. They lead the Angels for home-field by 4.5 games and the Red Sox by 5 games in the division. Boston gets to face CY Young candidate Zack Greinke tonight, while the Yankees send out Chad Gaudin against Ervin Santana to try and win a game against the Angels. A win or rangers loss wraps up a playoff spot for the Yankees, but if have to face the Angels in the ALCS, home-field advantage will play a huge role in the series, hence why these next two games are important.

As for the good news, Andy Pettitte did look good going 6 innings surrendering 3 runs. Too bad the Yankees offense couldn't muster anything up.

Not so Dandy: Andy Pettitte will be skipped in his scheduled start tomorrow because of shoulder fatigue. He is slated to go Monday instead. Chad Gaudin will get the nod tomorrow. I don't think this is a serious issue, the Yankees are just being cautious with the playoffs right around the corner.

Him again: Roy Halladay takes the mound for the Blue Jays after shutting out the Yankees in his September 4 start against them in Toronto while allowing only one hit and striking out nine.

2010: The 2010 preliminary schedule was released by the MLB and the Yanks will start the season in Fenway against the Sawks.

NESPN: ESPN recently launched ESPNBoston.com, a website devoted to Boston sports, to go along with the TV Channel they've had since 1979.

UPDATE 10:23: Luckily they have the 40 man rosters, because there are probably going to lose a couple of guys for several days.

UPDATE 10:33: So, Posada is going to be suspeneded for some time here. He was the only Yankees ejected, and hopefully the video tape doesn't show too much that makes MLB take more action.

Home is where the heart is: Yanks win again in extras to end homestand

Wednesday, August 12, 2009

Blue Jays 3 14 1
Yankees 4 7 0

WP: Gaudin (1-0)
LP: Camp (1-6)

This is one of those games where it's a little obvious that the Player of, Play of, and Turning Point of the Game are all about Robinson Cano and his walk-off hit.

GAME NOTES

  • Gaudin came in and got some big outs for the Yankees in advance of his start on Sunday. Hopefully the joy of going from last place to first place will help Gaudin lock in and pitch well down the stretch.
  • Burnett didn't really pitch well today, allowing 12 base runners in 6 innings while throwing 107 pitches, but the Yankees were still able to pull through with a win. It's good that even when one of your top guys has a rough day on the mound, the offense can still hit well enough to win the game.
  • The Yankees finish this home stand 6-1, and are 15-2 at home since the All-Star Break. Now they head out for a road trip that begins in Seattle tomorrow.

GAME 114: Yankees vs Blue Jays

Lineups via PeteAbe
YANKEES (70-43, First Place AL East)
Jeter SS
Damon LF
Matsui DH
Rodriguez 3B
Posada C
Cano 2B
Swisher 1B
Hinske RF
Cabrera CF
Pitching: RHP A.J. Burnett (10-5, 3.67).

BLUE JAYS (54-58, Fourth Place AL East)
Lineup TBA

Let the Good Times Roll: They Yankees are 5-1 on the homestand, have won 8 of their last 9 games, are 27 games over .500 and 5.5 games up in the division with A.J. Burnett on the mound today.
Can They Do It Again?: The Yankees have hit back-to-back home runs in their last three games, can they make it 4?
Homer Haven: The Yankees have hit 14 home runs in their last 6 games. They lead the majors with 173 home runs, 105 at home.
Not Quite Invincible: Mariano Rivera gave up his first run since June 12 yesterday after 2 months of throwing scoreless innings.
Joba Update: Girardi has said Chad Gaudin will get the start Sunday and Joba's next start will be on Wednesday. This is to make sure he can limit his innings and stay in the rotation and pitch in the postseason this season.

I don't know if I'll be able to throw in any updates for this game, but I'm sure you will find enough great insight from Michael Kay during the broadcast. That is if he doesn't make the broadcast an extension of his radio show like he normally does.

UPDATE 4:45: So I (Jim) just get home as the game is tied 3-3 in the 10th. Jeter left the game early with a contusion (bruise) on his foot after getting hit by a pitch in the first inning.

UPDATE 5:10: Wow, Robbie got a hit with runners in scoring position. Nice win for the Yanks.

Oops! They Did it Again: Yanks go back-to-back in eigth to beat Jays

Tuesday, August 11, 2009

Blue Jays 5 8 0
Yankees 7 14 0

WP: Robertson (2-1)
LP: Carlson (1-5)

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Jorge Posada. The catcher went 2-4 with 2 RBI's, including the go-ahead home run in the 8th inning.

TAMPA, FL - MARCH 1: Catcher Jorge Posada #2...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

PLAY OF THE GAME: Posada's go-ahead home run in the 8th.

TURNING POINT OF THE GAME: The Thrilla from Godzilla! Matsui's home run seemed to wake up the team, the Stadium, and certainly John Sterling (I was listening on the radio).

GAME NOTES:
  • The Yankees win today's game exactly as they won Sunday's, with back-to-back home runs in the 8th inning after being down by one, hence the "Oops I Did It Again" headline.
  • Rick Porcello is my new favorite player not on the Yankees, because he absolutely PWNED Kevin Youkilis. It wasn't as good as the Nolan Ryan v. Robin Ventura (which I can't seem to find a video of, but here's a picture) beat down, but because if was Pukelis, it will hold a special place in my heart.
  • So the Yankees seemed to jolt themselves from the sleepwalk they were in after the Boston sweep. That's good because I'd like this divisional race to be over as soon as possible, and winning games is the only way that's going to happen.
  • New Yankee Chad Gaudin will start on Sunday, with Sergio Mitre going on Saturday. This effectively gives them a 6-man rotation, at least for this turn. It basically helps them limit Joba's innings by pushing him back a day.
