CC on mound with series, Cy Young on the line

Thursday, September 23, 2010

So after the Rays won last night, the Yankees are 1.5 games ahead of the Rays for the AL East divisional lead. So if you're a baseball fan, tonight's game is a piece de resistance. We've got CC Sabathia vs. David Price in a Cy Young pitcher's duel. The Rays came out on top the last time these two lefties faced each other, but hopefully the Yanks can pull out this one, and get CC win #21.

Notes:
  • Former Yankee (and Red Sox) was claimed off waivers by the Boston Red Sox today. The Tigers and Sox have 48 hours to work out a deal, and Damon also has a no-trade clause.
  • Ivan Nova gets his first MLB start. He's pitched 3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen so far this year, but let's see what he's got against a good Blue Jays lineup.
  • Let's hope things go better this time in Toronto.

DET 5
NYY 9

WP Moseley (3-2)
LP Bonderman (6-9)

Players of the Game: Curtis Granderson and Mark Teixeira. Granderson's new and improved swing has been productive so far and he's really been playing good defense. Another diving catch and another home run tonight for the Grandy Man. Teixeira was the only Yankee with a multi-hit game tonight going 3-for-4 with a home run, double, and two RBI.

Play of the Game: Granderson's diving catch in the fourth. He was frozen for a second then had to come in on the ball and made a nice diving catch.

Turning Point of the Game: I'd say Granderson's home run. It broke the game open and it was key because the Yankees bullpen had to work out of a lot of threats in the late innings.

Notes:

  • David Robertson and Mariano Rivera both pitched on back-to-back days in non-save situations. This might affect the way the bullpen is used tomorrow.
  • The Yankees remain tied in first with the Tampa Bay Rays with tonight's win.
  • Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira went back-to-back in the first inning to give the Yankees a quick 3-0 lead.
  • The Yankees bullpen once again did a great job. Joba, Kerry Wood, Chad Gaudin (who actually wasn't effective, David Robertson, and Mariano Rivera). Robertson got out of a bases loaded jam that Gaudin got into by only allowing one run.
  • I fell asleep at the beginning and wasn't really watching late so I don't fully understan what was going on with the home plate umpire and hit batsmen tonight. Apparently the benches were warned in the first and I believe it was the eighth when Miguel Cabrera was hit in the back after he hit two home runs already. Jim Leyland thought Chad Gaudin should be ejected but he wasn't. Leyland argued and was thrown out. The following inning the Tigers pitcher threw behind Jeter and was also not thrown out. And Girardi was irritated by this because it was blatantly with intent. So very confusing night for the umpire behind the plate.

Looooooong Day at Yankee Stadium

Sunday, July 25, 2010

So today I was at the Yankees-Royals game to see A-Rod attempt to hit career home run 600. It was blistering hot outside but that didn't stop the fans from getting on their feet during every A-rod at bat. Unfortunately A-Rod was unable to come through, but the Yankees still put up a 'W' with a 12-6 win over the Royals behind two Curtis Granderson home runs.

There was also a two-and-a-half hour rain delay which caused many fans to leave. My friends and I sticked around and were able to move our seats from the bleachers to the second-deck level seats thanks because my friend's brother knew people who were leaving and gave us their tickets.

Not many fans stuck around, but we did with a chance to see history, however, it was to no avail. We did see Robinson Cano's 1,000th career hit, so we didn't go home milestone-less.

I'm absolutely exhausted so I'm sorry if you were expecting more but I'm just too tired to blog. Just going to watch Entourage and call it a night.

For the Boss and Bob

Friday, July 16, 2010

Nick Swisher hits the walk-off single to win the game 5-4 in the ninth. What an emotional, dramatic, and key win for the Yankees tonight. They distance themselves to 3 games ahead of the Rays in the AL East and Mr. Steinbrenner and Bob Sheppard are looking down at Yankee Stadium with a smile on their faces.

I'm going to have to admit, I'm still disappointed Derek Jeter didn't come through for the storybook ending in the ninth. He probably had the closest relationship with both the Boss and Sheppard out of all the Yankees. Nonetheless, all the Boss would have wanted is a win, no matter how it got done or who got it done.

Mariano Rivera had an impressive ninth inning where he picked off B.J. Upton and struck out Evan Longoria. David Robertson also had an impressive outing, striking out the side in the eighth inning.

Down 3-1, Robinson Cano and Jorge Posada hit back-to-back homers to tie the game. The Rays were able to take the lead thanks to some misplays by Nick Swisher, but he made up for it tying the game with a monster shot to right field. He later got the big hit winning the game in the ninth.

This game kind of reminded me of the game after Thurman Munson died. Very emotional. Back and forth contest. 5-4 final score, both games won in the ninth. I thought the ceremony was well done, the Bleacher Creature silent roll call, and the PA address system shutdown for the game were go ideas remembering Bob Sheppard and the Boss.

No question it will be an Instant Yankee Classic...probably Monday.

NL Gets World Series Home Field

Wednesday, July 14, 2010

Yeah yeah, I know this is late but I feel obligated to make a post on the All-Star Game. Yesterday the NL All Stars defeated the AL All Stars 3-1 behind Brian McCann's bases loaded double off Matt Thornton. Phil Hughes was charged with the loss while Matt Capps earned the win and Jonathan Broxton closed it out for the NL's first victory since 1996.

As for the Yankee All Stars, Robinson Cano had the AL's only RBI with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Derek Jeter walked against Ubaldo Jimenez, struck out against Josh Johnson, and singled off Roy Halladay. Nick Swisher struck out against Adam Wainwright.

Andy Pettitte pitched a scoreless third inning, striking out two batters and inducing a groundout to Jeter who flipped to Cano for a force at second (very familiar).

Phil Hughes recorded one out and allowed two singles before being relieved by Thornton. Thornton could not get out of the jam and the runs he allowed were charged to Hughes, hence whyHughes picks up the loss.

Alex Rodriguez did not enter the game at all. Now, this seems to be the subject of debate today, and I found it a little surprising but here is what I think. First, it seemed Girardi wanted to give guys who were in their first All Star Game a chance to play, hence why Adrian Beltre, Ty Wigginton, and Nick Swisher got in the game ahead of A-Rod. Secondly, I think maybe he didn't want to use A-Rod unless necessary so he can give him full rest these four days. But with home-field advantage on the line, I think you need to find a way to get A-Rod an at bat late in the game.

Either way, the NL was due. I've been expecting them to win for the last five years. It's just the law of averages. The Yankees have won World Series titles without home field advantage before, I'm sure they can do it again if they get back there this year.

Swisher to Compete in HR Derby

Saturday, July 10, 2010

Nick Swisher will be competing in the Home Run Derby on Monday July 12. His announcement comes two days after the fans selected him as the final All Star for the American League team. Obviously, this will become an issue inside the Yankees clubhouse after the coaches already expressed dismay when Robinson Cano was going to compete in it before a minor back injury caused him to pull out. (I think they faked it). Now Girarde and Kevin Long will be getting questions on whether Swisher should compete or not.

I think they'll have less of a problem with Swisher competing than with Cano. I know I do. The Yankees coaching staff has put so much work and effort into making Cano a complete hitter over the last two years, they did not want to see it all go away because of the Home Run Derby. Swisher, on the other hand, is a born power hitter. That's what he's done his entire career up until this year, when the Yankees finally got him to start hitting for average. The only thing I'm worried about is if this will cause Swish get in a habit of swinging for the fences every at bat. Hopefully not, and if he's quickly eliminated we won't have to worry.

Cano to be in HR Derby

MLB announced today that Robinson Cano will participate in the 2010 version of the Home Run Derby.

The other five players who have already committed are: Miguel Cabrera, David Ortiz, Vernon Wells, Corey Hart and Matt Holliday.

Now I guess it's cool to have Cano in the Derby but I don't really like it. A lot of guys screw their swing up trying to hit homers and there stats suffer in the second half of the season. Cano's on pace for an MVP season, and I don't think he should screw it up for the HR Derby. Cano isn't a Ken Griffey, Jr. type player who has a natural home run swing. He's more of a line drive hitter who lifts homers out. If he tries to uppercut homers during the Derby, it could affect him during the regular season.

All-Star Team Announced

Sunday, July 4, 2010

MLB announced the selection of the AL and NL All Star teams this afternoon. Six Yankees were selected, including Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano as starters. The first time a Yankee double play duo have started an All Star Game since Willie Randolph and Bucky Dent in 1981.

The rest of the Yankees include:
Alex Rodriguez
Mariano Rivera
CC Sabathia
Phil Hughes

Nick Swisher can get in with the final vote in ballot. WE WILL NOT LET YOUKILIS WIN THIS!

But the real news is that Andy Pettitte is missing from this list. Pettitte is having one of the best seasons of his career and it is shocking that he was not selected, especially when his manager and former teammate is picking the roster.

However, due to the new rules, a pitcher selected to the All Star Game that pitches on the Sunday before game cannot be eligible to pitch in the game. Sabathia will be pitching on that Sunday. The theory is that Andy Pettitte will be chosen as Sabathia's replacement since he cannot pitch in the game.

Game 5 A.J. Showed Up

Wednesday, June 16, 2010

I wasn't closely following this game so I'll just go over a few things on my mind.

  • In a World Series rematch, the Yankees were hoping for Game 2 A.J. to show up and shutdown the Phillies. Instead he woke up a slumping offense by pitching more like the A.J. Burnett that got lit up in Game 5. I don't remember the last time Burnett had a solid start. April maybe?
  • The good news is the bullpen did a fine job today. Boone Logan and Chad Gaudin were able to shut the Phillies down and keep the Yankees in the game. The Yankees ninth inning rally fell just short as Lidge struck out Posada who represented the tying run.
  • What can I say about Robinson Cano? Did you see the home run he hit? It hasn't landed yet. The guy is on fire and it's safe to say he is the best second baseman in the league right now. Maybe even best hitter? Definitely in the discussion.

Jorge Feeling Grand

Sunday, June 13, 2010

HOU 5 8 1

NYY 9 9 1

WP: Hughes (9-1)

LP: Moehller (0-1)

Player/Play/Turning Point of the Game: Jorge Posada pulled off the trifecta and is awarded all three of these with just one swing of the bat. Posada hit a grand slam to put the Yankees up 7-1 in the sixth inning. It was his second grand slam in as many days after not hitting a grand slam since 2004. Despite a comeback from the Astros this hit really put them out of the game and had a long ways to get back into it.

Notes

  • Chad Huffman must have enjoyed his debut. He singled, walked, and even reached base on a strikeout.
  • Robinson Cano hit his 100th career home run which tied the game at 1-1 at the time.
  • Ramiro Pena did a nice job filling in for A-Rod. He made a nice diving play and also hit a two-RBI bloop single to put them up 3-1.
  • As I type this the Rays are losing in the ninth 6-1. If that score holds, the Yankees move into a first place tie with the Rays.

Milestone Watch: Robinson Cano has 99 career home runs and is one home run shy of hitting number 100.
Back Behind the Plate: As old as Posada may be getting, when he found out he'd be catching today he hit a grand slam yesterday, so maybe it's better to put him behind the plate for his psyche.
Huffman Up: Chad Huffman was called up from Scranton after Marcus Thames strained his hamstring and will be out for two weeks.
Huuuuges: Phil Hughes can move into an AL-leading tie in wins with David Price today.

Seven Year Anniversary: So it didn't come to my attention until I went on River Ave Blues that today is the seven year anniversary of when the Houston Astros combined six pitchers to no-hit the Yankees. It was a very unusual no-hitter and the Yankees faced Octavio Dotel, Brad Lidge, and Billy Wagner the final three innings. No easy task. Anyway it's the first time the Astros are back in town since then.
Lowly Stros: The Astros are bad. Maybe not as bad as the Orioles, then again the Orioles are playing in the toughest division in baseball. However, the Astros have won eight of ten but they are running into former 'Stro and vintage Andy Pettitte.
All-Star Starter?: Andy Pettitte has put together one helluva a start to the season. Especially coming from a guy who is known as a second-half pitcher. Pettitte is 7-1 with a 2.47 ERA and isn't exactly facing Murderer's Row today.
Cano Cleaning Up: Robinson Cano is batting cleanup for the second time this season. The first time he went 3-for-4 with a grand slam. Let's see what today brings.

Like I Said Earlier, Every Day

Wednesday, June 9, 2010

A Yankees victory over the Orioles is as sure a thing as the sun rising in the east every morning.

NYY 4
BAL 2

WP: Sabathia (6-3)
LP: Tillman 0-2
S: Rivera 14

Player of the Game: Who else but Robinson Cano? The guy got three more hits and an RBI and is now batting a league-leading .376! He's ridiculous.
Play of the Game: I'll give this one to Kevin Russo's diving catch in the eighth inning. It was a two-run game and making that play prevents any momentum to get an Orioles rally going.
Turning Point of the Game: I'm going to say it was when Sabathia got Luke Scott to strike out with the bases loaded in the seventh innning. That strikeout was huge as it was only a one-run game at the time and it killed the Orioles only legitimate rally.

Notes

  • Brett Gardner had x-rays on his left thumb before the game, but they came back negative and he ended up pinch-running and scoring a run late in the game.
  • Sabathia still did not have his best stuff. It was his fourth straight win this season against the Orioles.
  • No home runs by the Yankees tonight ended an 18 consecutive home run streak by the team.

Just Another Win Against the Orioles

Thursday, June 3, 2010

The Yankees continued their dominance of the Orioles and homestand by completing another sweep of the O's.

BAL 3 3 1
NYY 6 12 1

WP: Sabathia 5-3
LP: Millwood 0-6
S: Rivera

Players of the Game: I couldn't decide between the two, so I'll give it to both CC Sabathia and Alex Rodriguez. Sabathia won his first game in a month by throwing seven innings allowing three runs and striking out seven batters. Meanwhile, A-Rod had a nice game too, going 2-for-4 with a two run home run.
Play/Turning Point of the Game: I didn't see much of the game so I'll give the play the same as the turning point, which was A-Rod's two-run homer in the third, which gave the Yankees a comfortable 5-0 lead.

Notes:

  • Sabathia attempted to field a hard hit ball back to the mound with his bare hand, but he's fine.
  • Robinson Cano. Is there anything he can't hit? He just flicked the bat on a pitch off the outside corner and drilled it to centerfield. He now has a 17-game hitting streak. I made it my facebook status in April, and I will stick by it, Cano can win the AL MVP this year.
  • Always nice to see Brett Gardner hit a home run. Those are very rare.
  • Anyone interested in what was going to happen with the botched call in the "perfect" game last night, apparently they will not reverse the call to an out.
  • Michael Kay's Successors will be going on a road trip to Toronto to see our beloved Yankees play north of the border. We won't have any posts over the weekend but we will be sure to have pics and a post about our experience in Toronto and at the Skydome (it will always be the Skydome to me).

Yankees Farm System Making an Impact

Monday, May 10, 2010

“Brett Gardner’s perception around the league is changing.” That’s what was said on Saturday’s FOX broadcast. The same thing has been said a few times on the YES broadcasts. There’s even speculation that the Yankees won’t go after free-agent to be Carl Crawford because of the success Gardner is having this year. Gardner isn’t the only Yankee farmhand making an impact this year though. Many, many more are too.

Robinson Cano has made the biggest impact. Cano is coming off a month where he hit .400/.436/.765 had 8 home runs and 18 RBI, and was named AL April Player of the Month. He is beginning to show that he may be the best all-around hitter on the team.
Then there’s Phil Hughes. Hughes is off to a remarkable start, going 4-0 in his first 5 games, has an ERA of 1.69, and came within four outs of a no-hitter.
Then there’s Joba Chamberlain. Yes the highly debated Joba is having a quiet season because he is excelling in his role as a setup man. Even when called upon to get a couple saves last week, Joba was able to get the job done.
There’s also Francisco Cervelli. Who made everyone’s worries about Posada’s bat in the lineup disappear this past week, especially after his 5 RBI game against the Red Sox on Saturday.
But the Yankees farm system is making an impact further than just the Yankees system. You can start by looking at a player who was highly touted during his time as a Yankee minor leaguer—Austin Jackson. Jackson leads the league with a .370 batting average and has scored 24 runs and hit 3 triples. He has provided a spark to a fairly old team, as they are just 2.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins.
Move over down to Washington and you’ll also see a familiar name in Tyler Clippard. The reliever was traded for Jonathan Albaladejo, and it looks like the Nationals are getting the best out of that trade. Clippard has been stellar out of relief, going 6-0 with a 0.76 ERA and has 29 strikeouts to 12 walks. The Yankees could probably use that efficiency out of their bullpen.
Even Ian Kennedy is doing a fairly good job out in Arizona. He’s 2-2 with a 3.48 ERA and 35 strikeouts. Imagine if he was in the rotation over Vazquez?
You can look at the success of these youngsters from the Yankees system in a number of ways. The more cynical fan would say the Yankees should have held on to the ones that got away and the team would be that much better. Or you can look at it as the players currently on the team could make for good trading chips should the Yankees need to acquire a starting pitcher or big time bat.
Or, you can just look at it and realize that the Yankees scouting department and the coaching development is doing a terrific job in making major league ready players. Many have criticized the lack of farm system depth with the Yankees over the years, but you can no longer argue that. In addition to the players in the majors, they have prospects such as Jesus Montero, Austin Romine, Ivan Nova, and Slade Heathcock who have high potential.

Many teams overrate their prospects, but the Yankees now have a proven track record that they are doing a good job scouting and developing their players. And if the Yankees need to make a trade, or need to call somebody up, there will be little doubt about whether that prospect can fulfill their role at the next level.

Hughes Continues to Impress in Win

Friday, May 7, 2010

NYY 10 11 0
BOS 3 9 0

WP: Hughes (4-0)
LP: Beckett (1-1)

Player of the Game: Phil Hughes. Man has Hughes put together a good start or what. Seven innings, seven hits, two earned runs, and seven strikeouts while only walking one. Seventy of his 101 pitches were strikes.

Play of the Game: Nick Swisher's 3-run home run. It was the only home run of the game and it put the Yankees up 3-0 early, and Beckett began to get rattled.

Turning Point of the Game: Francisco Cervelli's bases loaded walk. The walk made it 4-1 and signaled that Beckett had lost control of the ball and couldn't find the plate if he had a GPS.

Notes:

  • The fact that Beckett lost the plate in the sixth was a bit nervewracking and infuriating, to both the fans, and the Yankees. Robbie Cano left the game, although Girardi said he'll play tomorrow, he came close to Cervelli twice, and Jeter got hit. When Jeter got hit it looked like the Yankees bench was a bit fed up and were up on the front step yelling out onto the field. Now, it's tough to determine if he was throwing on purpose being the bases were loaded, but nobody likes to see their players get hit. Beckett was pitching more like Daniel Cabrera or Vicente Padilla today, guys known for not having control and hitting batters. And nobody likes those pitchers.
  • Phil Hughes did not retaliate, and we'll see what happens tomorrow, since CC looked very agitated during that sixth inning. But Hughes has been brilliant. He just went into Fenway Park and basically shut down the Red Sox, bringing his ERA down to 1.69 and is a perfect 4-0 on the season.
  • Another disheartening outing from David Robertson. In a 10-2 blowout you don't want to walk two batters and give up a run. If he allows a 3-run homer after those two walks, it's 10-5 and suddenly the Red Sox have life.

Tomorrow

Yankees at Red Sox 3:05 p.m. Fenway Park

Sabathia (4-1) vs Buchholz

UPDATE: One more thing I want to add. I was listening to the last inning on the radio and when the final out was made John Sterling just simply said "Yankees win." What's up with that? I know it was a blowout but he always at least half-asses a "Thheee Yankeeees win!" A bit disappointing if you ask me. I wonder what the IT IS HIGH blog will say about this.

Red Hot O's?: The Orioles enter the game with the worst record in the majors, BUT they just swept the Red Sox and have won 4 of their last 6. But I think that has more to do with the Red Sox than Orioles.
Wild Pitches: Jeremy Guthrie takes the mound today and the Yankees have not been very fond of him. He hit Mark Teixeira in spring training and hit Jorge Posada last week, causing him to sit out a couple of games. Be interesting to see what happens tonight.
Player of the Month: Robinson Cano was named April's Player of the Month. Do I need to go any further on why? He's been tearing the cover off the ball.
CC vs the O's: Sabathia owns the Orioles. He is 10-1 with a 2.62 ERA lifetime against them, including a win last week at Camden Yards.
