Toronto Blue Jays Fans: Worst Fans Ever

Friday, September 4, 2009

Originally, I was going to make a post today to embarass Red Sox fans and make Yankee fans happy, by showing some interesting numbers over teh last two weeks. Such as the Red Sox have won 12 of their last 15 games and still remain 7.5 games behind the Yankees. But I just read on Pete Abe's blog a few interesting stories on the fans of the Toronto Blue Jays.

According to Pete, Nick Swisher and Jerry Hairston Jr. were talking about how disrespectful the Blue Jays fans are and the abuse they were giving the players. Now, when you are on the Yankees the abuse is kind of expected, but they were suggesting that Toronto is the worst environment for opposing players, which is just embarassing for your fanbase. Not only were the fans cursing at the players, but they threw things at them too. I missed some of the game, but apparently a foul ball was thrown back onto the field and nearly hit Alfredo Aceves. Now, I understand why people throw home runs back into the field, despite the stupidity of it (I have always said I'd only throw a Red Sox HR back onto the field, but probably never would), but a foul ball? You have to be kidding me.

Pete also had a story from one of his readers on how the fans were erratic during the season opener and were throwing paper airplanes and almost hit Curtis Granderson with a ball. We've all heard people consider New York, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, and Philadelphia as the most aggressive/intimidating fans, but Toronto Blue Jays fans are making all of us look a lot better.

I'm all for taunting and harassing players on the other team, as long as it is done in a playful manner. Just yelling that a player "sucks" isn't that big of a deal. Or chanting their name after they make an error. But when you start throwing stuff and personally attacking the players, there is a line being crossed.

So congratulations Toronto Blue Jays fans for now giving yourself the reputation of being the worst fans in baseball, and perhaps sports. Your team hasn't even been good for 15 years either, so you have absolutely nothing to be proud of. Go watch the Maple Leafs, wait, they suck too.
