Run this Town: Yanks sweep Orioles in Yankee Stadium South

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

Yankees 10 17 0
Orioles 2 8 0

WP: Sabathia (16-7)
LP: Mickolio (0-2)
S: Hughes (2)

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Alex Rodriguez. The third-baseman drove in 4 runs with 3 hits, including the go-ahead single in the 7th inning.

PLAY OF THE GAME: Robinson Cano's double play to end the bottom of the 7th inning. It's plays like that one that make you shake your head every time Robbie does something stupid in the field, because you know how well he can play the field.

TURNING POINT OF THE GAME: A-Rod's aforementioned 2-run single in the 7th. It gave the Yankees a lead, and they never looked back.

GAME NOTES:

  • If Mariano Rivera is the Sandman, Brian Bruney is the Alarm Clock. He can't get through an inning anymore, and his batting average against (BAA) is .218 against lefties but .281 against righties, so being a specialist is out of the question. He'll need to put his head on straight if he's going to get the opportunity to pitch the rest of the season. At this point, you've got to think Girardi might hand the ball to someone like Mark Melancon or Mike Dunn to see what they can do.
  • I guess it's a good sign that the only thing I can find to write a 90-word rant about is the 5th-best reliever on the team,
  • The Yanks scored 9 runs in 7th inning or later. That's a sign of a team that knows how to come through in the clutch and, sometimes more importantly, knows not to take it's foot off the gas pedal.
  • The Orioles are not very good right now, but teams as good as the Yankees need to beat up on these teams. The Yankees are 45-18 against teams under .500. The Red Sox are only 39-18, that's a difference of 3 games in the standings. This race would be a lot different if it was 4.5 games instead of 7.5. (Written with the Rays up 8-5 in the bottom of the 8th, so I'm working on the assumption that score holds up).
  • And, by the way, I was listening to music during the game, and came up with the perfect title should we win the last game of the season in late October. So keep rooting hard and stay tuned.
TOMORROW:
