Pitching Matchup

Jeremy Sowers (1-2, 7.71 ERA)

GOLDEN GLOVES: The Yankees are going for their 18th consecutive game without an error, which would set a Major League record.

JOBA TIME: Joba takes the mound tonight, which means that if he pitches poorly, tomorrow the radio shows will be buzzing with talk about him moving to the bullpen. So let's hope he pitches well and maybe put that to bed for at least a week.

SHAKING UP THE LINEUP: Swisher is in the 2-hole tonight while Damon and Matsui are on the bench. Girardi's probably looking to get Swisher going by hitting in front of Tex and A-Rod. Damon and Matsui are just getting a day off against the lefty. (But considering he has a .286 batting average against lefty batters, so you have to wonder why.)

UPDATE 7:31: Good first inning from Joba, it's good to see him making adjustments. Did John Flaherty say that Joba might lose his spot in the rotation? I think Cashman made it pretty clear with his statements last week that Joba is not going to the bullpen.

UPDATE 8:30: Well, if you're going to lose a perfect game, you might as well lose the no-hitter and shutout at the same time. But Joba needs to make sure he stays in control, he's still got a good start going. He just needs to buckle down and hold the Indians to 1 run and let the offense go to work. He's only at 58 pitches through 4, so he should just keep doing what he's been doing.

UPDATE 8:41: Joba looking like a Gold Glover right there. It wasn't exactly the most beautiful dive, but it did the job. I'm sure a lot of people were holding their breath for a moment there. It reminded me of the play in 2000 where David Cone dislocated his shoulder in Kansas City against the Royals.

UPDATE 8:50: Bases loaded, no one out, cleanup hitter up. You need to score at least two runs.

UPDATE 9:00: Poor job by the Yankees there. You can score two runs without getting a hit and they didn't score any. Huge blown opportunity.

UPDATE 9:24: Nick the Swish comes through with a big hit there. Good job just going with the pitch there.
Now they are walking the bases loaded to get to A-Rod. He needs to give us some cushion here.

UPDATE 9:30: Nice AB by A-Rod right there to put the ball in play and score two runs. Poor baserunning by Tex, though. That could kill a bigger rally.

UPDATE 9:55: Joba going out for the eighth.

UPDATE 9:57: Joba just started swatting at midges and then threw a ball horribly outside, and I had horrible flashbacks.

UPDATE 10:02: Big outing tonight by Joba. 8 innings pitched, 2 runs on four hits and two walks with 5 strike outs.

UPDATE 10:18: Can I ask a question? What in the world does cavemen bowling have to do with car insurance?
